The primary reasons for using Stellite in orifice plates or Restriction Orifices (ROs) are:
1. Wear resistance (the most important reason)
When the fluid contains solid particles—such as sand, catalyst, or sediment—the sharp edge of the orifice gradually wears down. As the edge becomes rounded, the discharge coefficient (Cd) changes, and the accuracy of the pressure drop measurement is compromised.
Due to its high hardness, Stellite maintains the sharpness of the orifice edge over an extended period.
2. Cavitation resistance
Cavitation can occur in fluids experiencing a high pressure drop. The impact and collapse of bubbles damage the orifice edge; Stellite offers excellent resistance to this phenomenon.
3. Corrosion resistance
In services such as:
Seawater
Sour fluids (H₂S)
Certain acids
Corrosive environments
